The way I think about it is something like this.
There are two levels of assessing the management of the team.
1. Are they selecting the right strategy to execute
2. How well are they executing the strategy they have selected
We can debate #1. I would be in favor of a proper extended re-build to give the franchise a foundation of assets it needs to create a team that contend for an extended period of time.
However, I've accepted they didn't choose that strategy and thus at some point, to me, it makes sense to move to the second level question.
So then we debate how well they are executing the strategy they have chosen. That strategy is focused on trying to extend this team's contention window, and try to win now.
So then I evaluate the moves they make on that basis. Because if you evaluate the moves because you wish they were re-building, almost everything they do will feel like a failure because they didn't pick the strategy you would prefer.
