Every day Huberdeau waits potentially costs him. He won’t get $84M as a UFA, and if he’s not sure how he’ll gel with Sutter or Lindholm, it’s all the more reason for him to secure that bag now - even a 70 point season would be disastrous for his value as a 30 year old winger, to say nothing of what could happen if he tears a knee up or something.
Not that I think either is likely, but it’s certainly not impossible.
Flames just need to make the contract as signing bonus heavy and buyout-proof as they can legally do, and I think the money wins out.
I refuse to believe that we can’t pay Canadian superstars $10.5M a year to play in Calgary.
