And the same with South Vietnam except it was corrupt and got run over.

So are these countries taking advantage of being propped up by the US against communism?
I don't think I know enough about the situation in Korea to really comment knowledgeably on it.

In terms of Taiwan and the US, saying they're "taking advantage" of the situation has a little bit of an exploitative connotation to it, whereas I think it's more fair to view it as them navigating the circumstances they find themselves in as best they can for their own development. The fact that the US has economic and security interests there, which are quite different from having any interest in the actual people of Taiwan, creates conditions for the Taiwanese to benefit in their own trade and security. That's just playing the hand they've been dealt imo, and in the past decades it has offered some good opportunities, but how it works in future decades is uncertain.

Maybe this is similar with South Korea. I don't know. North Korea and China are obviously very different countries to have to deal with though, for South Korea and Taiwan as well as for the US.
