if I were him I would have asked for at least 6.75M - 7M to buy more years. Otherwise I'll bet on myself and line up to cash in again for one more deal. I would be doing the math of what I think I could earn in 3 years, including recognizing that the cap will start to grow by then. Doing that math I probably want to be in the high 6s for sure.
Logically if the Flames could have inked him for 4 or 5 years at 6-6.25 they would have probably made that deal.
I think that's what people are saying - that the fact they went short-term probably means there wasn't common ground for a long-term deal.
