The timing of Gaudreau’s career year was also bad. Had he been coming off years closer to the one he just had or the 99pts in 2019 he would have been in line for the $9.5-10.5M deal the year before free agency and likely signs the deal.
The 2 Covid years he had 107pts in 126 games which rounds up to 70pts per 82 games. That is not a 9.5M salary for a player who at the time was all offense and not the 200ft player he became in his contract year.
Flames likely offered something around 8.5M per and Johnny decided to bet on himself. One spin on this is that Geoff Ward cost this team Bennett and Gaudreau
