I read an article (for all I know it was probably linked on this site somewhere so this may be a repeat) that in the '50's clover was an important part of lawns. Then, the developers of broad leaf herbicides could not figure out a formula that would kill the undesirable lawn weeds, but leave the clover alone. So, they campaigned against clover and convinced the public it was a weed.

No idea if that's true so it could just be a conspiracy theory. Seemed plausible though.
