Once a week mowing and watering and twice a year fertilising is a lot of water and energy considering the requirements of almost every alternative.
Again, letting it go to crap obviously doesn’t look good and is probably laziness, but it’s better for the environment and wastes nothing, so there’s credit due there at least. “Devaluing” your property really only matters if you’re selling. As long as you’re taking care of your house, maintaining a manicured lawn is just stupid excess.
I never water, mow 2-3 times a year, and never fertilize. Good mix of landscaping, clover, and native wildflowers looks better than any boring lawn.
