Maybe that's what it "would take" from an Islander's perspective since they have such little talent outside of Barzal, but that doesn't suggest it's a good deal for Calgary to make.
You can make the argument that Mangiapane alone is a more impactful player as it stands today than Barzal is. Dig into the numbers. Barzal is not a high end #1 center. He plays extremely sheltered minutes, is not relied upon in the faceoff circle (for good reason), and is not a great finisher, nor 200 foot beast. Over the past three seasons Mangiapane and Barzal's even strength production/60 are near identical. You also have to factor in that Barzal has set up his contract in a very similar fashion as to Tkachuk - and he will be needing a 10M dollar qualifying offer after this upcoming season. Yes, 10M.
You can certainly prefer Barzal as a player but the difference in value between the two certainly is not a 25 year old top pairing defensemen. Noah Hanifin is so incredibly undervalued by this fanbase. Every team in the league would be lining up to acquire this player.
The grass isn't always greener.
