Yes, but the difference between those 8 year contracts is a 29 year old year vs. a 37 year old year.
For sake of argument, say each year is valued as follows (pretty simplistic to make the numbers work; obviously very debatable - and to be clear this has nothing to do with salary breakdown, just what a FMV would be in each given year):
29 - 13
30 - 13
31 - 12
32 - 12
33- 10
34 - 9
35 - 8
36 - 7
37 - 6
Take 29-36 and you get $84M. Take 30-37 and you get $77M (8x9.625).
As I said, it's hard to actually nail down fair 'values' for any given year, and you don't actually have to have things total up sensibly (using these number Johnny's 7 year deal 'should' have been 77M., but its an illustrative way to look at it.
