If my pay rate was highly variable and tied to my recent amazing performance, I'd absolutely be keen to lock in. The alternative is finding myself in any of 22 other cities, who may/may not be keen on retaining my services beyond this year.
He could try to control the situation like Tkachuk, but given his AAV it's possible a team will make the best offer regardless of mutual interest for an extension.
