You could do that. I like to fly from Calgary through Seattle and then straight through to Lihue. You clear customs in Calgary so all you have to do in Lihue is pick up your luggage and go.
Returning, it is a domestic flight from Lihue to Seattle so no need to clear customs until you are back home in Calgary.
You could go through LAX or San Francisco as well, I just find Seattle less busy.
