That basically makes the Tkachuk trade getting the equivalent of ~4 first round picks + 4 prospects/lower picks which surely you'd agree is an exceptional return for any player. There's no way they get that return just by trading Tkachuk directly for a package of futures. While I think it's pretty unlikely for them to go the rebuilding route, it's still there as an option and even if you preference is to tear down and go for a lottery pick this next year, you still do this deal every time.
This is at least a more reasonable response. It's good to get something back but there's still a lot of risks in getting two soon to be UFA agents - worst is if both walk for nothing. Secondly, this team currently with Huberdeau and Weegar is not much better off than last year. So, it's almost like saying, "hey let's just get into the playoffs. Who cares if we get knocked out in the first or second round again." The mediocre BS must stop somewhere. And no, I don't expect teams to give up their unprotected first round draft. Flames need to do that for themselves. And no, it's not just Bedard I'm talking about. Look past the first overall pick people.
