This is a key part of it. It comes down to this and a constructive discussion.
We traded for you because we really want you here long term. It is important to work with you and your agent to get a long term extension in place before the start of the season. Let’s work towards a contract that reflects the success you’ve had and your value. From our standpoint with what has happened over the last couple of weeks, this is very important to the organization. If we can’t get a deal done, we won’t have certainty throughout the season and will always be assessing our options instead of focusing on the goal of being successful and making a deep playoff run.
I think at some point we need to acknowledge not only the players value and needs but that getting extensions done timely (early?) is a business need. There should be a clear acknowledgment of that and deadlines set with your players that allow you to avoid what just happened.
