Valimaki needs to have a tremendous season in the AHL just to be back in the Flames' longterm plans. His stock has fallen a lot.
Mackey could probably stick as a full time NHLer this year if there was an opening.
They two aren't really close to each other.

At the same time, Mackey is turning 26 in September, has 9 games of NHL experience and is at best 7th on the depth chart for dmen on the team right now, and Valimaki played 49/56 games in the Covid season, played well in 18-19 and might’ve stuck if he didn’t get injured, and before his injury was looking real good, so at his age the potential is still there.
