1) He might get injured, lowering his value or worse, making him basically untradeable.
2) Most teams buying at the TDL are contenders, meaning their first round pick will be in the 20s. By trading before the season, you might get lucky on a team trading their first and then falling off a cliff.
3) Keeping him means we have a better chance of being in a playoff spot at the deadline. I’m okay with being honest upfront saying either you extend or we’re trading you at the TDL, no exceptions, but it would be a harder sell to the fanbase I’m sure.
I appreciate it’s a tough conversation to have with a player who just arrived — hey Jonathan, please sign an extension or we’re trading you — but I think you can have that conversation honestly and point to the fact that you JUST dealt with this exact situation the year before.
