Adam Fox didn’t need to inform the Flames he wasn’t going to sign with them, but he did, and that allowed them to trade him for some value.
The difference between Fox and Tkachuk is that Tkachuk played for the team. But Gaudreau isn’t getting any credit for even playing into UFA years, so I doubt it matters much in terms of the overall narrative for each player.
