I know this is 'captain obvious', but the Flames have to be active right now. They have a surplus in RH D and at LW. They are very shallow at C and RW. They also have nearly 12-million invested in two bottom 6 players (Monahan/Lucic). Finally, several of their players are waiver eligible and easy waiver pick-ups (Valamaki, Mackey, etc).
They can and will shuffle LW to RW to help mitigate that gap, but they are dreadful at C unless Monahan is 100%.
Kadri is the obvious choice and would solve a lot of problems. The Flames tried to trade for him so they like the player. But even if they manage it they still need some help up front and with the cap.
Who are the players the Flames may be looking to move?
Reasonable:
- Hanifin: Good player on a great contract, but he is signed for only two more seasons. If the Flames want to deal their defensive depth to go after a big fish then Hanafin could very well be involved.
- Valamaki: He couldn't crack the depth chart last season and its improved. He is waiver eligible and still has value. Good chance he is moved.
- Lucic: The Flames would probably like to keep him, but 5.3 million for a fourth liner is a luxury the Flames don't have. His real world salary is only 1-million this season so I think the Flames can find a taker. Matching that to his 8 team list could be a challenge though.
- Monahan: Monahan is the type of player the pre-Monahan Flames would have targeted. Former 30 goal / 60+ point C that could return to form. Final year of his contract minimizing risk, and the price is right. Its a better bet then a Phaneuf / Stajan swap, Jokinen 2.0, or a Cervenka hail Mary. Decent chance the Flames find a buyer.
Dark Horse:
- Andersson: On one hand he is signed 4 more seasons to a value contract, he led the team in ice time last season, he saw a big leap in his offensive and defensive game, and he is only 25 years old. On the other hand he has more value then Hanifin, but Hanifn is probably the more complete player. The Flames also have a lot of RH shots in the system.
- Dube: Only a dark horse because his versatility and low cap hit are probably worth more to the Flames then what they will get in return. Otherwise his inability to find a consistent role would suggest he is a likely trade candidate.
- Mangiapane: The Flames can't afford to lose Mangiapane, Gaudreau, and Tkachuk in the same off season. Except Treliving has to be a bit worried the huge jump in goals last year might inflate his contract value. I think they make it work though.
- Huberdeau: It is easy to say 'trade him at the deadline' if they can't sign an extension. But if the Flames are in the same position as last year there is no way they are trading a top player away from the team. If Huberdeau doesn't want to talk extension with the Flames Treliving may choose to trade him now and investigate other options.
- Vladar: Wolf has earned a chance to compete for a spot. Vladar was a functional back-up, but he doesn't scream 'future starter'. There is no rush on this one so it probably waits for camp. It will take a massive effort (and most likely an early season injury) for Wolf to make the team as the back-up, but its possible.
