There is no language in the CBA about bonuses being exempt - in fact it’s clear that they are subject to escrow. The top google result article for ‘nhl escrow signing bonus’ claims the weird scenario about paying it via salary, but I’ve never seen a citation.

I don’t know the escrow implications, was just commenting that I don’t think he’d be less popular if he did find a way around it.
