Only the Flames could give Johnny the 8th year to bring the AAV down. Besides, Johnny was (speculating here, but it seems reasonable) probably willing to take a home town discount to sign long term with the Flyers.

I think this would have been such an improbable scenario, we would’ve also needed to take back their cap dumps on a team that’s still trying to win. A players’ rights historically speaking aren’t worth much and it’s hardly worth anyone’s time debating it.
Now trading Johnny last year might’ve gotten us something. But then you take away the fun of last season and the game 7 OT winner and etc.
