If this is true and Treliving is working this angle as well, then he is moving up the echelon of GMs. It would be great to start the season with Huberdeau on the wing, but if he's not signing before they drop the puck then it would be best to get younger assets/picks upon which the team can build over the next 3-5 years. If the Flames begin the season with Huberdeau unsigned, there is no way he gets moved unless the team is abysmal before the deadline, thus there would be a likelihood of receiving only one year of Huberdeau in this deal. This would be a level of proactivity which the Flames have not displayed in a long time, and is the kind of thing teams trending upwards have a tendency to pursue.
