Could still turn Huberdeau into the package a lot of people were wanting prior to the trade deadline or draft next year (Ie. budding young high end player + blue chip prospect + 1st). I really think Tre did a great job of not going full rebuild by backfilling losses with a premium asset to keep the team competitive in a weak Pacific division (which may not be weak in a season or two) and still have flexibility to rebuild with that asset if a shift in direction needs to happen.

This is Grade A asset management.
Huberdeau as a rental isn't getting you a high end player, blue chip prospect, and a 1st. Which is why I hope Treliving has an idea of the odds of locking him up. Hopefully that extension happens this summer. The fact that so much extra was added to the deal makes me slightly nervous. That seems like a bit of hedge against the risk. Lock up Huberdeau and it's a great trade. If he walks then I think Brad screwed up because trading a 24 year old 100+ point player should bring you back something solid to build around for the next 5+ years. If we trade him as a rental I think we just end up really watering down the return for Tkachuk but I guess time will tell.
