Damn, what a difference it makes to move a very good player who's going to stay with his new club long-term. Deadline rentals don't usually get nearly the return.
At first blush this trade looked like robbery in favour of the Flames. Huberdeau was a potential MVP, Weegar is surprisingly a first-pairing guy (or at very least a 2nd-pairing one), and Schwindt is a decent prospect who's already seen a bit of NHL duty.
The possibility of the UFA's leaving for nothing and Schwindt turning into a Morgan Klimchuk or Mark Cundari tempers expectations. Just saying that to, you know, blow out the candle before it has a chance to burn. It's more likely one or both of Weegar & Huberdeau will stay on or at least be flipped for other assets later.
Getting a 1st not one, not two, but three drafts down the road is kind of weird, but obviously there wasn't much choice if Florida was to be the trade partner. I wonder if Treliving will use it as a trade chip or to actually draft a player.
