That's probably why I'm struggling with this trade in the first place, like what is Treliving's ultimate goal here, is it to just make the playoffs or is it to compete for the Stanley Cup?...because in my opinion, I think we're considerably further away from the Cup then last season.

The Flames team last year could have beaten the Oilers. Tkachuk had a bad hand, we didn't have our best defencemen and our goalie played way below his typical level. Most teams are pretty close and we could run that series 10 times and get a pretty split result.
As for building to beat the avs and Tampa, you can't think like that, you could try and get all those pieces for decades and never get them.
Build the best team, get in the playoffs and see what happens.
