I don't see what people don't like about this.

Out:
Tkachuk, 4th round pick 2025

In:
Huberdeau (5.9AAV)
Weegar (3.25AAV)
Schwindt (prospect)
1st round pick 2025

Flames competing:
They replaced their top line winger with a more offensive top line winger who also makes players around him better, and is faster, plus a top pairing defencemen for the same cap hit as Tkachuk. Weegar might play on the second pairing anyway I think, but the Flames got better defensively, and at worse, a wash as compared to having Tkachuk there.

Don't forget about the 1st (2025 is a way's away, but still a 1st) + Schwindt who seems to be tracking well.

If Huberdeau and Weegar do not want to re-sign here, then:
Weegar can fetch a 1st at the deadline - maybe a 1st plus a B prospect.
Huberdeau can fetch at minimum - MINIMUM - a 1st + whatever team's BEST prospect that's not on the team.

5.9AAV on Huberdeau. At the deadline it will be what? 2 million? Heck, what do you think Calgary can get for Huberdeau right now as a rental? 2 firsts and a prospect I bet if Calgary retains 50%. How interested would Colorado be in acquiring Huberdeau for 2.95? Tampa? Just about anyone would fall over themselves trying to acquire Huberdeau if they have cup aspirations.

This is the equivalent of trading Tkachuk for 4 1sts + prospect (and probably plus something else).

Does this make the Flames a contender again? Well, I would like to see what else they grab. Let's not forget that this is another year, so maybe Pelletier is ready. Maybe Ruzicka has worked his butt off this off-season and really has a great year. Flames have cap room (and maybe they trade Lucic still, plus with players going to arbitration, it will open up a 2nd buy-out window so they can potentially make more cap by buying out Monahan if nobody takes him and the Flames have to unload him).

This is a fantastic trade. Both for the "Win now" crowd, and the "Rebuild crowd" too - it really is a win-win here. Hopefully Huberdeau and Weegar both extend. If not, I would expect Treliving to trade them by the deadline. As long as they don't leave as UFAs, I am happy either way. The only risk is injury.

Really wouldn't surprise me, however, to see them both re-signed.
