Doesn’t matter if the American might leave in UFA or might not sign, in the end if they are the best player you’ll get more value out of them than a bust.

While I agree with this, another strategy worth considering is moving up or down in the draft via trade if you think your pick will line up such that an American will be the best player available at that time.
