To those wondering why sick stuff like this is allowed to happen, it's the same sort of macho culture that's allowed for hazing to be so pervasive in university sport teams and frat clubs. Junior players, who are young, immature and of course easily impressionable, could easily get sucked into doing something this as some sort of badge of honour / rite of passage.

Don't for a minute think that this is a Canadian problem.. it's a hockey problem and generally a male problem, but the alpha male culture of hockey is a big contributor.
