I quite like the idea of taking on Tarasenko and moving him for a pick. Flames could easily retain a bunch of his cap hit/salary to move him at the deadline if they're going to rebuild. His actual salary in the coming season is only $5.5 million. He would be an attractive rental worth a 1st round pick with a lot of that retained at the trade deadline.
The ideal to me seems to be the Flames trading their current high value players for picks and prospects, using the cap space to take on expensive players with expiring contracts along with more picks from teams that want cap relief, and then dealing those players at the deadline with retained salary to get more picks/prospects.
