Those 5 guys only have two years left...are they going to re-sign here? Can we actually win the cup in the next two years without Gaudreau and Tkachuk? Do we even want to give them their next big contract?

Backlund will be 35 when his contract expires.

Lindholm will be 29 turning 30.

Toffoli will be 32

Tanev will be 34 turning 35

Hanifin will be 27.

Really only Hanifin is in the age group where you'd want to re-sign him to a big contract, and IMO he's likely the one of the bunch that the least likely to re-sign.

Even if you just want to make this a quick re-tool instead of a full scorched earth re-build it would be prudent to move these guys.

Problem is that we have missed this window of opportunity.
If you are going to move players and cap you need to do it before the draft and free agency or be prepared to take ugly contracts back.

This is a great idea and plan come February and the trade deadline, especially if the team is struggling or middle of the pack.

If they are still competitive there is no way the team will be selling off.
