But as we move forward there are 5 names on the Flames that are 2 years to UFA that if you were to retain 50% on their contract would probably become top targets for any team in the league...just need to determine what 2 to use your retention spots on.
With 50% retention:
Elias Lindholm: 2 years at $2.45M
Backlund: 2 years at $2.7M
Toffoli: 2 years at $2.12M
Tanev: 2 years at $2.25M
Hanifin: 2 years at $2.5M
Imagine the return you could get on any of those names when you have the ability to retain so that 2 of them could actually be traded at a cap hit less than $3M.
If you were to shop Lindholm around the league at 2 years at $2.45M you might get a better return than you end up getting for Tkachuk.

If they were rebuilding, yes.
Lindholm at $2.45M for two years would absolutely bring in a massive haul, much more than 1 year of Tkachuk.
