Might wanna ask Philadelphia, specifically about Johnny Gaudreau playing for them. You have to own the guy's rights and have the cap space to bring them in. Philadelphia was not prepared for the unlikely event that Gaudreau came available. Teams need to plan for these things, so they have the space or can give up the assets to get him right now, or risk that someone else snaps him up and then signs him long-term.
