Wouldn't returning to the moon reduce the difficulty of a manned mars mission.

You could create a assembly and launch facility for assembling the type of craft that could get people to the moon without dealing with earth's gravity on launch.

I'm no rocket scientist but we'd have to probably build a lot larger of a habitual space. I mean you'd have to pack food and water, for 9 months x 2 as well as the power generation to do it. I would expect that a trip to mars wouldn't be a landing on for a few days and returning home. That it would be a long term mission. So just based on that, you'd probably need to assemble something in orbit, and fuel it in orbit. Or send it to the moon and assemble it there.
