If they make it to Aug 11, they have to do the arbitration hearing, there'll be an arbitrator's decision which the team has to agree to (and sign him to 1yr), or they turn down the arbitrator's decision, and he becomes a UFA doesn't he?
The only ways he's on a longer deal is if the Flames trade him before the 11th & he signs an extension elsewhere while still an RFA, or they do a sign & trade (which as noted by others is very rare).

It was my understanding that the Flames, or whoever hold his rights, would still have the option to an 8th year extension after arbitration, I believe it has been noted as January 1st.
