It's a negotiation and that's why all the specific parts are in the mix. It provides value and improvements in key areas for each team and balances out the risk.

OK, so they are not getting Tkachuk.
But Calgary has to trade him. No team has to trade for him.
Calgary can say "you're not getting Tkachuk" right up until he leaves as a UFA.
And once his salary is set via agreement or arbitration, the extension is off the table until Jan 1. So, that ticking clock is preventing Treliving from sitting on his high horse for too long. There are likely only a few teams who are serious contenders for Tkachuk. Treliving can't afford to dismiss any of them.
