Even if Tkachuk signs an 8-year, $80M contract, that cap hit means his value is not at an all time high. His value was likely greatest when he was on his ELC. We don't see that because great players in that situation are not traded.
Most good teams in the US that Tkachuk might want to go to will have lots of trouble fitting him in. Even if they can this year, they may have been saving space to fit other players in next year.
And when cap strapped teams (basically all good teams) are cap strapped, they need to rely upon their prospects and high draft picks to see them through with cheap, good players. There will be a general reluctance to send them all away in a trade for a very expensive player who they have trouble fitting in, and now have less prospects to fill out their roster cheaply.
I expect Calagry will need to take back some cap to make a decent trade.

Honestly that’s how they should be thinking. If they commit to a hard reset they will have plenty of cap space to take on some bad contracts in exchange for more draft capital
