It's not screwing the team by choosing where he wants to play once he hits UFA. It's really the only time players get to choose.
He's not demanding a trade, he's willing to go to arbitration and get a one year deal. It's simply in Calgary's best interest to trade him so he doesn't walk for nothing.

Honestly, both are tactical errors by Treliving.
For the Johnny contract, the fact that he insisted on the stupid "Gio" cap really handcuffed himself, so in the end, he was only able to get Johnny on a 6 year deal because he was unwilling to sign for more money.
Had the Flames offered Matthew a similar deal that Brady got (8 years x $8M) rather than insisting on max $7M per year, I really think Chucky would have signed it then. Again, a tactical error by Treliving that came back to bite him, just like the Johnny deal.
