There's also a collegial element there - it could be a bit of a dick move for a 'star' insider to swoop in after fellow journos have cracked the door open. Which isn't to say it's a turf thing and that more people can't ask questions, but it takes A LOT more work to get something like this reportable.
I'd bet guys like Friedman kick some tires and pass along relevant info to their colleagues who are actually deep on this story.
