They just weren't good enough and today they're a lot worse. They MIGHT make the playoffs if a few teams just stop playing but even then, it's 4 games. They are not beating the Avs so if the goal is to win the cup, they need to find a way to rebuild properly. If the goal is revenue from a couple of playoff games, they are going to mortgage their future even more...and the cycle of mediocrity will continue.
The writing is on the wall, they aren't good enough and need to rebuild if they want to be competitive. This coming draft looks incredible so not a bad time to bottom out. There is a lot of pairity in the league so more teams will likely be buyers. The Flames have a lot of decent players that would make good trade assets. They just aren't as good as the sum of their parts and definitely not good enough to compete.
The time is now. Burn it to the ground.

The nice part about burning it to the ground is that after a few years of zero playoff revenue, if attendance drops and there’s still no end in sight to the arena situation, Edwards will just move the team and we’ll miss out on the benefits of of a rebuild.
Fun stuff. Can’t wait.
