Plenty could’ve been done. He could’ve tried signing Gaudreau to a 7 or 8 year deal instead of only 6. Ditto for Tkachuk. He could’ve tried harder extending Gaudreau and Tkachuk last offseason. He could’ve not made all those UFA blunders which hurt the team’s competitiveness during their 2018-2022 window. Remember, that disastrous 2021 season prompted Tkachuk to request a trade, so that really set the tone for this offseason.
Obviously there’s a ton of hindsight involved in all of these decisions and etc. But the main point I’m trying to make here is that all the decisions “yesterday”, ultimately affects how things play out today. Brad Treliving has a ton of blood on his hands and I think its too easy to just say there’s nothing he could’ve done.
