Chicago traded all their players this off-season so next off-season they will be drafting high.

Gaudreau leaves, trade Tkachuk to NJ for that 2nd overall, find a spot for Markstrom, trade for Mrazek to recoup a first round pick in 2022, so they draft 2nd and 25th, then go into this season with no hope of competing giving them the best chance possible to draft a franchise player next season. Like Chicago did.
But if NJ didn’t actually offer the 2nd overall you trade him to whoever the highest bidder is, and you don’t have the high 2nd rounder to trade to Toronto so you give up… what?

Chicago traded two players this off season. They let a bunch of value guys walk for nothing. Which is fine.

I’m fine with moving Tkachuk for a pick in 2023 over one in 2022. Also allows you to find a better value deal instead of rushing the trade.
