That's assuming that New Jersey was going to trade the 2nd overall straight up for Tkachuk, which, as far as I know, was never reported. They were said to be discussing trading that pick to several teams. We have no way of knowing at this point which team would have given them the best offer, or what that offer would have looked like. All we know is that nobody gave them an offer they were willing to take.
For all we know, they were asking Tkachuk++ for the pick.
