I think the reason the Flames went for club-elected salary arbitration is they were afraid he was gonna take the QO and get to UFA as early as possible. But as others have pointed out, this provides a deadline further into the future than the QO. It would’ve been a 1-year deal with the QO or with club-elected arbitration, but now there’s more time to negotiate with Tkachuk OR work out a trade. The trade seems more likely at this point.
