As others have said, the QO actually likely wasn't a bad thing for the Flames. Means he was likely open to playing here, as he'd know the Flames have the option to match. From the Flames perspective the compensation if they didn't want to match was have been good.

I agree with you on the QO part though, and probably the more likely reason they did this. Which means trade him if that was the risk. But if that's where they are at, there is 0 reason for the Flames not to do this, it's the right move. Gives them control and timeline on making a trade.
