Even the big Calgary offer didn't come until the very last minute. I get that a GM doesn't want to overpay anyone, but JG was the team's best player and Brad grinded him for every last nickel on his last contract. `
Sure, if you are New York go ahead and roll the dice, but if you're a Western Canadian Club you should get an answer on the player before the 11th hour.

You could always read the thread and find out the answers.
For example: Treliving did try and sign Gaudreau last summer, the discussions didn’t pan out and they agreed to try again after the season. Johnny indicated that he was willing.
The big offer came late, but after the ask by Gaudreau, which they matched. And they previously offered a contract almost exactly what he ended up taking (except with an extra year).
Sorry not everyone wants to sign their Darnell Nurses to ridiculous contracts a year out.
