The only saving grace is that Tkachuk might feel better negotiating a long term deal now coming off of a 100 point season, than possibly taking a dip next season and then negotiating a long term deal. Plus, his agent likely realizes that the team is a little desperate right now for some positive PR and to stop the bleeding. That gives them a little more leverage.
Having said that, Tkachuk seems like the kind of guy who bets on himself and isn't considering a decline next season, nor is everything always about money.
