Well if Gaudreau had replicated the season before and scored a measly 72 points he probably would have signed for a similar number to what he could have signed at the summer before. He certainly would still be a 6.5-7 million dollar player as a 70 point forward. The upside to having a great season is much more than the downside to having an average season.
There is no rational reason, outside a fear of a career ending injury, of Managiapane to think he will have a worse season this year. He almost never played with Gaudreau, Lindholm or Tkachuk last year and he had limited PP time. He will have more PP time this year and should see more even strength time with Calgary’s top players. If I was him I would have a number that I would sign a longterm deal at (7 years at 6 million a year would be my number if I was him). If the Flames hit it and he wants to stay in Calgary, sign. If not, bet on myself that I can get at least that number a year later.
