Maybe. Although that's a pretty important skill for a representative: nailing down a client's exact wishes and having the experience to realise when they're unsure or unclear, and then guiding them through that.
Who knows whether Gross had the rug pulled out from under him completely, but if the story is as advertised, I do feel for him. I've had similar things happen where I've told clients in my most serious voice, "ok, if we do THIS, then THIS is the possible result" and still somehow they've misunderstood me and led me into professional situations I'd rather have not been in. Then I drop them as clients.
But yeah, having a feel for when one of those awkward situations is coming is definitely a skill in Gross' position.
