No, this was all about getting the hell out of dodge. Which he absolutely earned the right to do. He really did not earn the right to do it the way he did it however. He doesn't owe the team any loyalty or whatnot, but he at least could have done the honorable thing and been transparent with the club.

People want to say its all about winning & the deal, and those guys that are ruthless and don't get emotionally attached to teams & players are the ones that are more successful, but I disagree.
This is a team sport, and the reputation of both the player & the team are extremely important. At the end of the day you want players that are good teammates & loyal to the culture you are trying to build.
Yes, they have their rights, but to think that you still shouldn't be honest & transparent about what you want to do is dumb.
I have yet to read a post that explained why what Johnny did here wasn't a stupid decision and tarnished his reputation. Hard to see a scenario here where this doesn't happen again. A guy that has no problem pulling something like this on a team that helped him build his career with almost certainly have no problem doing it to ANY other team.
