The connecting flight to Philly from Newark does not even involve an aeroplane. (The connecting flight to Philly from Philly can be done by standing still, but that offer fell off the table because Chuck Fletcher bungled.)
Incidentally, there
are direct flights from Calgary to Newark, and they do not take anywhere near 7 hours. I am informed that they are scheduled to take about 4.6 hours, which leaves more than enough time for the extra driving distance.
If this were really about the family, Gaudreau would not have reduced his distance-from-home from 2,000 miles to 400; he would have reduced it from 2,000 miles to nearly zero. He had an offer on the table from the Devils that was nearly as good as the one from Columbus, and by one report, better. There was supposedly a similar offer from the Islanders.
So after turning down more money to be close to home, he turned down multiple offers close to home to get more money – but still less than the first offer he turned down.
He screwed up – massively.
