I had a great lawyer, not from a litigious aspect but from common sense, he was clear from the start, hold the line on joint custody and half the house and no alimony just child support, nothing else is worth arguing over.
My ex desperately wanted to use court to fight over anything and everything, which was weird because she wanted the divorce not me, at one point when we were in discovery (?) she demanded the canoe I would take my kid canoeing in knowing full well it would annoy me, as I started to argue my lawyer just leaned over and whispered in my ear as it was about to go to arbitration as we couldn't agree 'you will be able to buy an effing sailboat for the cost of the argument over the canoe'
I saw sense and told her to keep the canoe, three months later she rings me up and asks if I want to buy the canoe off her as she has no way of moving it in her sports car, now I will admit it was a bit childish but my reply was 'not if it was the last boat in the world and God was bringing back Noah and the sodding flood'

Just remember arguing costs extra money so only do it for the big stuff, the house the kids etc and my advise is if you can pull it off is be as upset mopey and sad as you can manage around the ex, never let her know if you have a girlfriend, she will be way easy to deal with if she feels sorry for you, once court is over live your life and rub it in her face if you want but hold off until court is done
