Treliving sacrificed short term gain for long term pain. Icing the best team possible shouldn't be looked at in one year intervals, but should be fluid. Again, Gaudreau had hinted before that he would one day like to play somewhere else. He flat out said that it would be cool to one day play closer to home. His family, whom I believe are nice well intentioned people, complained about the distance. His contract was running out and went into the final year with not even ongoing discussions of an extension. You don't need to be a mind reader to see red flags. Management gambled and lost, and that is on them. None of this came out of the blue, except maybe Columbus being the final destination, but that part is irrelevant.

Managers don't need to be mind readers, but they do need to be able to read situations.
